Whether you’re trying to shed a few pounds or maintain a healthy lifestyle, dieting is often a significant part of your journey. But do cheat meals work? Many diet plans and fitness experts tout the benefits of incorporating cheat meals into your routine. Cheat meals are planned indulgences where you allow yourself to enjoy your favorite, often less nutritious, foods guilt-free. While they can provide some advantages, they may not be necessary for everyone.

Cheat meals are essentially breaks from your usual diet plan, allowing you to enjoy less healthy foods that you might otherwise avoid. These meals are typically planned, rather than spontaneous, to maintain a sense of control and moderation. They act as a reward for sticking to your diet plan and can help prevent feelings of deprivation and cravings that might arise from strictly following a strict eating regimen.

Strict diets can take a toll on your mental well-being and any diet that is being stringent is probably doing you more harm than good. This year I am in the process of dieting to participate in a bodybuilding competition which requires me to lose fat. For the vast majority outside of sport there is no real need to follow an extremely strict diet, especially if it is leading to psychological distress.

The “Cheat Meal” has been on the rise over the passed decade with 60% of men and 53% of women reporting to participate in a cheat meal once a week. This typically sees people take on an additional 1000 – 1500 calories over their daily intake. It’s leading a lot of people to suggest younger generations are developing binge eating behaviors which may pose significant health risks. More research is required to understand the impacts on people’s health.

Changing Eating Behaviors

It’s important to note that the information being researched is showcasing a trend where younger people are starving themselves throughout the week. this is to obtain a low body fat composition and engage in binge eating activities on the weekend to “refill”.

It’s a dieting trend that is irrelevant and harmful and no need to be undertaken to achieve a low BMI. Simply following a healthy diet plan and avoiding calorie dense meals can achieve the same results without the need to starve yourself.

For some individuals, indulging in a cheat meal can lead to a slippery slope, causing them to overeat or give in to unhealthy habits more frequently. This can slow down progress and make it challenging to achieve weight loss or other health goals.

Cheat meals can create an unhealthy relationship with food, reinforcing the idea that certain foods are “good” or “bad.” This mindset might lead to feelings of guilt and anxiety when consuming treats or enjoying social gatherings, hindering a balanced approach to nutrition.

Take a More Balanced Approach

Many health experts advocate for a balanced and sustainable approach to eating rather than restrictive diets. By incorporating your favorite foods in moderation within your daily or weekly caloric intake, you can still enjoy treats without needing designated cheat meals.

Although currently I am in the midst of participating in a show I haven’t been missing out on my food. I alter the way I prepare and cook my food which I covered in a previous article. Which means I don’t miss out on anything but I must admit I have never had much of a sweet tooth.

And yes, while I have been cutting out some meals and replacing them with my own Protein powders I won’t be doing it forever. While I won’t be running down to order a truck load of chocolate and deep fried foods (those are sometimes foods in general) I look forward to not having to count calories and have to be precise in meeting targets.

Just remember, unless you have a real reason to be limiting your diet. You don’t have to. Enjoy life it’s too short to skip the finer things and remember. Everything in moderation.
