Victoria University, in collaboration with the Defence Science Technology Group (DSTG) of the Department of Defence, has embarked on a pioneering research endeavour titled ‘The effects of post-exercise carbohydrate availability on skeletal muscle and whole-body adaptations to endurance exercise training in moderately-trained males.’ This study, part of the broader field of ‘Performance Nutrition,’ aims to shed light on optimal nutritional strategies for enhancing endurance training adaptations.


About the Project: Balancing Carbohydrates for Peak Performance

Carbohydrates serve as the preferred energy source for muscles during high-intensity exercises. Common wisdom advocates for maximizing carbohydrate intake before, during, and after exercise to meet the demands of training, enhance performance, and replenish muscle glycogen stores. However, recent evidence suggests that training with restricted carbohydrate availability post-exercise can amplify molecular signals within muscle cells, promoting endurance adaptations.

The project, led by Dr Matt Lee and Professor David Bishop, seeks to strike a balance. It will explore the effectiveness of consuming sufficient carbohydrates over 24 hours to support recovery and glycogen replenishment while temporarily restricting intake for three hours after exercise. This strategic approach aims to maximize signals for adaptation, offering a unique perspective on post-exercise nutrition.

Research Goals: Exploring the Impact on Performance and Adaptations

The study, spanning eight weeks, will delve into various aspects, including:

  1. Exercise performance
  2. Aerobic fitness (maximal aerobic capacity)
  3. Body composition
  4. Molecular processes within skeletal muscle that promote adaptation

By examining how carbohydrate consumption or restriction during a short recovery period influences endurance training adaptations, the research team hopes to provide valuable insights for exercise scientists and nutritionists.

Participate in the Study: Who Can Join?

The study is currently open for recruitment, and the team is seeking men who meet specific criteria:

  • Age: 18 to 45 years (participants over 40 require a medical certificate)
  • Health: Non-smoker, free from pre-existing medical conditions
  • Activity Level: Moderately active, engaging in 2-3 hours of moderate-to-high intensity exercise per week
  • Additional criteria for body composition, BMI, aerobic capacity, and cycling time trial performance will be determined during initial lab testing.

  2. An 8-week endurance training program, including high-intensity interval training (HIIT), sprint interval training (SIT), or moderate intensity continuous training (MICT) sessions
  3. An 8-week nutrition intervention involving carbohydrate beverages or placebos post-training
  4. Post-training tests
